The Vincent
House

The Oldest Historical Landmark

The Vincent House was built in 1872 by one of the first pioneer families in Fort Dodge, James and Adeline Swain. The Swains worked in the wholesale and retail drug business. During the time that the Swains lived in the house, Adeline dedicated most of her time to educating women. Adeline was the first woman in Iowa to lead the women's rights movement, which furthered the rights of women's suffrage. During the eight years that the Swains lived in the house, rooms were rented out to newcomers arriving to Fort Dodge. In 1879 Webb and Catherine Vincent bought the home and moved in1879. Webb's son Donald was then just a small child. Donald met his wife Ann, one summer day when Ann and a friend from Chicago University came back to Fort Dodge and attended a party at the Vincent House. They dated for a short time and then were wed. Ann married her betrothed Donald Vincent, had three children, one of which died at birth. Her daughters were Catherine Deardo and Nancy Vincent Nesbitt.  Upon Ann's death in 1969, she gifted the Vincent House to the Young Women's Christian Association of Fort Dodge to continue her support in advocating for women and women's rights.  On April 23rd, 1973, the Vincent House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Absolutely loved having my baby shower here. It was absolutely beautiful and our hostess was a godsend. She was so helpful and even when our party got busy, she helped keep up with putting out more dishes and beverages.

I especially loved that they set up the tables for you, provide tablecloths, and provide all the dishes, silverware, and serving supplies you need. I really enjoyed that we could use the original dishes from the house!

Thanks again for letting us have our party there. It was absolutely perfect!
